Scientists Develop First Functional Blood-Brain Barrier 'Assembloids'
A team of researchers has overcome a significant obstacle in modeling brain development, paving the way for advances in disease research and drug development
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a protective shield around the brain, made up of special cells like endothelial cells, astrocytes, and pericytes. This barrier keeps harmful substances and large molecules out of the brain while allowing essential nutrients and gases to pass through, ensuring the brain has a healthy environment for nerve signals. The tight network of cells in the BBB is crucial for brain health and is involved in conditions like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and stroke.
